The coach – athlete ‘contract’

PDF

Please read the following information. Using the pdf button (on the top right panel), print this document, sign and ensure you return to PBscience (this will probably be at your first coaching consultation and lab test).

What you can expect from PBscience:

  • Support and encouragement – we're here to help you achieve YOUR goals. At no time will the coach's ego get in the way, or become the priority.
  • Guidance, not instruction – this is a two-way relationship which will evolve over time. One of the coach's main aims will be to help you learn about your body allowing you to take more control of your own training plan with time.
  • Honesty and professionalism – We believe in clarity of communication. We won’t say one thing and do another. You can also trust us, so always feel reassured to share things that may impact on your training / racing.
  • Humility – We believe many coaches bathe in reflected glory: while we will share your successes, we will not make them our own. We will also be the first to tell you that we don’t know the answer – but we might know how we can find out!
  • Non-judgement – perhaps the best quality a coach can have: We’ve made enough ‘mistakes’ to understand the humanity in all of us. We coach the person, not the cyclist.
  • Coaching underpinned by science, but not to the exclusion of the ‘art’ – we are all individual. Some special performance breakthroughs have come from not being attached to an outcome nor a traditional way to train. We pride ourselves in thinking a little differently

What we expect of you:

  • Honesty – keeping us updated on ‘where you REALLY are’, not where you may think we want you to be!
  • Reliability – if the coach and athlete have an agreement on something, we appreciate you let us know if things change.
  • To communicate regularly – please don’t leave things until the ‘wheels have fallen off’ before contacting us. Its better you contact the coach if in doubt over something – sometimes all a person needs is a little reassurance to get back on track. Likewise, do get on touch when you are going well and just want to share that enthusiasm!
  • On the more practical side of things, we appreciate:
    • The responsibility lies with the athlete – unless we spot something that needs communication.
    • Ringing at the agreed time – as each coach has a number of athletes, we have to arrange calls at a specific time to suit people’s plans. If we say ‘7pm’, lets stick with ‘7pm’. Be aware, another athlete might have booked to phone after you.
    • Keeping your training diary up to date. If possible, please upload any data files / comments onto Training Peaks the day of your prescribed training. The coaches tend to check diaries each morning – if your diary is not up to date, we could miss an important aspect with your training.
    • Notifying us if you think you might have to change sessions around – We're realists; life gets in the way sometimes (!) but do try and run changes by us BEFORE making them if possible. We plan weeks with a given structure in order to achieve specific overload.

Lastly, we would like to enter this relationship with an understanding that there are ‘no guarantees’. If either the coach or the athlete has concerns about the coaching relationship, we would value that steps are taken to discuss this before sharing it with others.
