Bryce-Dyer

Having developed a knowledge of how I thought I should train over several years, I found it difficult knowing how to progress forwards as an athlete. What I needed was a coach who employed forward thinking and cutting edge methods of training yet sympathetic and flexible to a life filled with a job, family and other commitments. Helen has proved in a very short period of time to be the essential component of my sporting aspirations and repeated success. In my opinion, the best coach available. It’s that simple.

Due to Helen’s coaching, my cycling fitness and technical skills have improved measurably. The opportunity to undergo a series of tests in the laboratory under Helen’s expert supervision meant that she could write a goal focused training plan based on the results, all I had to do was train accordingly! For me, though, Helen’s ability to motivate and build confidence, and her “can do” attitude and open-minded approach to suggestions and new ideas are what make her a great coach. Jo Edson, a3crg ladies team

Louise_BurmanIt is great having the opportunity to work with Helen.  I have admired Helen for some years as a TTer.  In a male dominated sport it is lovely to have the expertise of somebody as talented as Helen with her knowledge of cycling as well as her scientific background. Louise Burman, a3crg ladies team

Simon_TurnerFor me one of the most important elements of being coached is to have someone who listens and works with me to help define realistic annual goals and how to achieve them. Helen and I have stuck up a good understanding and Helen has developed easy to understand and execute training plans for me. I’m excited about the scientific analysis of data (including power, both SRM and Power Tap) which will help to develop and execute more effective training sessions and define better feeding strategies. Helen has proven to be a good listener, providing excellent support through a period of injury. Simon Turner, Mountain biker

Chris_stocksAfter 12 years of racing, it felt like I’d tried all the sporting avenues to improve my performance. I had tried some coaching, but felt like the advice came from the same books I’d read. I discussed what I was looking for from a coach with Helen, from that point forward a whole new side to my racing and training has opened up. Working with Helen feels like a partnership with the objective to make me a better athlete. Helen’s ever positive outlook and real drive to want to coach are backed up by doing the research and not just reading about it. Am I a better athlete? The numbers prove it! More than that, I’m motivated by working with Helen and what that means for my future riding. Chris Stocks, Science In Sport

Tony_MillerWhen I returned to competitive cycling after a ten year break, I wanted to make the most of my ability by training scientifically. I chose Helen to enable me to do this because she combines academic knowledge with experience as a top-level racing cyclist. Helen gave me a full physical assessment and presented the results in a detailed report that idenitfied my strengths and weaknesses. She then provided personalised training guidance so that I can improve and achieve my targets. Helen is really knowledgeable, enthusiastic and supportive, and I would thoroughly recommend her sports testing and coaching services to any cyclist who wants to become a better rider. Jez_PontingI approached Helen in June 2008. My performances had plateaued and my motivation was in freefall. After an e-mail enquiry and lots of positive feedback about Helen I decided to ask her to be my coach. Helen halved my weekly training time and after only 3 weeks I had managed to start turning my season around. Over the winter and reverting to base mileage, my fitness quickly increased - we could gauge this with hard facts from lab tests. By June I came 11th in the National 50, a position I never thought possible! Things really are starting to click and I'm sure by the end of the season I'll have made an even greater improvement. Helen is passionate about cycling and coaching. She says she gets as much of a thrill seeing her cyclists achieve their goals as achieving her own, and this really comes over. She applies tested sports science combined with common sense to bring you on and she always listens to what her athletes tell her. No one gets the same training like other coaches and the training is aimed at you alone. Jez Ponting, a3crg

My wife bought me the PB Science 12 week programme for my birthday and I used it to prepare for the Etape Caledonia. During my initial fitness assessment and planning discussions with Helen I found her very professional and focussed. The 12 week programme provided me with structured development leading up to the race that I wouldn't have had without it. On the day of the event I used all I had learned during my training programme to get me through the 130k,very hilly, course with strength and energy for the whole course. Very happy with my time and overall position (12th in category). I would recommend PBscience to any cyclist whatever level who has a desire to improve. Tony Toynton, tri-athlete and challenge rider

Jim_MorrisI had cycling time trial objectives but no real idea about how to achieve them, apart from the haphazard training I had been used to in the past.  A coach, I hoped, would give a sense of purpose, some proper planning, a more scientific approach and then making sure I got things done.  Helen has been excellent in all these things, starting with laboratory tests, going on to set out a specific training programme and then supervising and giving encouragement to make sure I didn't flag. I have been particularly impressed with the science that Helen has brought to my training.  Everything I have done, from turbo sessions to racing, to achieve my aims has a solid background in the science of sports training, nutrition and so on.  All of this is backed up by the excellent resources and scientific papers available on the PBscience website. The whole experience with Helen has been a real eye opener to what can be achieved with a more dedicated approach to training and with her support I feel I have given myself every chance of achieving my goals. stewart_guynanTwo friends who know a considerable amount about cycling and, based upon their experience of other coaches they had tried out, recommended Helen as the "best of the lot". I participate in duathlon and considered that my weaker part of the sport was cycling and asked if Helen could improve my duathlon mainly by improving my cycling. The sessions Helen has set have improved my cycling (and mental) strength and I think the PB's will come in the summertime. Helen is an easy person to talk to, a good listener and thoroughly knowledgeable. Being a cyclist too, Helen understands some of the "softer" sides of setting a programme of cycle training. Stewart Guynan, duathlete

Craig_EadieI contacted PBscience as I needed a structured training plan to fit with my hectic work life which would ensure I am in good enough condition to complete the London to Paris ride in July 2009. I was extremely impressed with the speed of response and service. The lab test was initially somewhat daunting however once I met Helen and we chatted before the test I felt at ease. The results gave us the starting point to get me in shape. So far the encouragement and professionalism is fantastic and is a great encouragement to stick to the plan.... I now realize professional advice like this is not only for reserved for the elite it is for anyone who has a goal they want to achieve. Craig Eadie

I came to PBscience in January with two aims for the year, firstly to complete a charity bike ride from Chile to Argentina through the Andes and secondly to start racing in Time Trials. I'd been cycling as a leisure cyclist for 8 years, but due to injury had not done very much in the previous six months. My first set of lab tests showed my lack of fitness but Helen set me a training plan which soon changed that! My Training plan was tough but very achievable and I'm proud to say I completed the climb in Chile at the front of my group with the minimum of cursing! My second set of lab tests showed a pleasing increase in all fitness parameters measured. I love working with Helen, who encourages me daily to get the best out of myself. I'm proud to say that I'm a better cyclist than I've ever been. I feel that with Helen behind me I will complete my first race with confidence. Tracey Webb
