Training camps throughout the year

The Spring Camp, February (Majorca or Girona)PBscience-cycle-training-camps-in-majorca

We are often asked why we choose to run our Spring camps slightly earlier than some other providers, but we have our reasons. Camps in March and April are often too close to the season. In order to make the most of the training environment and weather, its understandable you want to be doing more miles on a camp. February is a time when volume is still high. February, although a little cooler, tends to be drier than March across Europe, the main venue for our camps. It might mean some days we cannot get into the local mountains, but the roads, not surfaced for the wet, are safer.

The mid-season break, July (The French Alps)

We believe that athletes should take a mid season break: to freshen the mind, body and spirit! For this reason, our July trip is more of a cycling holiday than a camp. Still, it serves as a useful week to get some volume in the programme again, but with a more relaxed mindset and among like minded people.

The Autumn camp, November (Lanzarote or Girona)

The UK race season tends to end for most athetes in September or October after which we always encourage an end of season break away from structured training. Therefore, what better way to get back into training following a few weeks off the bike than a training camp? Its also perfect timing to get time with your coach to debrief on the season and plan ahead. A week of sun might also get you through another winter of training again!

Lanzarote

PBscience-cycling-training-camps-in-LanzaroteLanzarote is one of the seven Canary Islands. Being situated close to the Tropic of Cancer and featuring a climate that results from a combination of high Saharan temperatures and a warm current from the Gulf of Mexico, the island enjoys an average temperature of 22°C all year round. Its no wonder it has become a popular training destination for athletes! When using the island for a camp, we base ourselves at the popular resort of Club La Santa. Located on the north west of the island, the resort is a modern hotel with all the necessary facilities of a combined sports, active holiday resort and conference facility.

Majorca

PBscience-cycling-training-camps-in-majorcaMajorca is a popular spring time destination for the training cyclist. Good quality roads, understanding motorists, varied terrain, and weather more inviting than the UK out of season! In February, when we tend to visit the island you can expect temperatures in the early teens - pleasant, but arm and knee warmers are advised. PBscience camps tend to be based in Puerto Pollensa, situated on the North of the Island, giving easy access to the mountain range on the north west coast, but also allowing flatter rides to the middle and south of the island. Its a popular cycling destination, and its not uncommon to be housed in the same hotel as the GB team.

The French Alps

PBscience-cycling-training-camps-in-the-french-alpsThanks to the Tour de France, this training camp location needs very little introduction! PBscience uses the King of the Mountains facility based on the Col d'Ornon in the heart of the 'Oisans', a massif of mountains on the border between the northern and southern Alps. As well as being only 10km away from Bourg d'Oisans and the famous 21 hairpins of Alpe d'Huez, Guy and Helyn are excellent hosts with massive of experience in looking after hot, tired, thirsty and very hungry cyclists.

"...huge breakfasts...home made cakes...delicious three course meals...very comfy lounge...lots of hot water..."; Cycling Weekly (July 2008).

Girona

PBscience-cycling-training-camps-in-gironaThe Province of Girona is in Catalonia, in the north east of Spain. This means there is year round sunshine with very few rainy days, enabling year round training. The area has become familiar to cycling fans, as its the training ground of Team Garmin and also a certain 7 times Tour de France champion. We will base ourselves with Fiona Smart and Gareth Speechley at "Girona Cycling" - their local knowledge will ensure we make the most of the week.
